FAQ Richard, often referred to as "The Miami Dog Whisperer" answers the most frequently asked questions he gets.... Are you connected to Cesar Milan, from the National Geographic TV series, Dog Whisperer? Great Question, thanks for asking. I respect Mr.Milan and have had the opportunity to see his show once or twice (and I recommend it, it is a good show!). There is no doubt that he is a world class trainer and knows what he is doing. That being said, we are in no way, shape or form related to his methods or to the show at all, far from it. The name "The Miami Dog Whisperer" was not something I came up with myself, it was actually given to me by the Miami Local media and some of my clients. The name comes from my ability to read dogs and almost communicate with them in their own language. Funny, a book came out in 1999 , way before Mr.Cesar Milan, called "The Dog Whisperer" by Paul Owen and I remember reading it and learning a lot from it. However, my training style is quite different from any conventional method and it has nothing to do with Mr.Milan and the Dog Whisperer show, or even Paul Owen's book "The Dog Whisperer", nor do we pretend or claim to be attached, or even remotely affiliated with any of these two famous 'Dog Whisperer's'. My method is the HeinZ method and it is unique to me, and it is a combination of different techniques and styles that I have developed along the way with my many years of experience with dogs and their owners. That being said, Although I don't encourage it, I'm always flattered to be called "The Miami Dog Whisperer" because I feel it is out of love and respect for my talents as a dog trainer, but I always make sure that my clients know that I have nothing at all to do with Mr.Milan , Mr.Owen and the Dog Whisperer Show. 1. At what age can I start training my puppy? Ideally you could start training your puppy at 7 weeks old. I start all of my own puppies at 7-8 was old. The earlier you start imprinting the easier your life is going to be. 2. Is it ever too late to start training my dog? It is never too late. We train dogs all the time that are 10 years and older. As long as they are still in good health, it’s never too late. 3. When do I know that my dog needs training? ALL DOGS NEED TRAINING. FACT! From Chihuahuas to Mastiffs. Unfortunately, for the dogs in our country everyone who has ever owned a dog or knows what one is an expert on dogs. So thousands and thousands of dogs end up in shelters or given away daily from a lack of true knowledge where our dogs are paying the price. 4. Will my dog still love me if I train them? This is the question that I believe everyone has in their hearts about training and the biggest reason that people may decide not to seek training. It really comes down to a lack of knowledge, again. People are always surprised how much their dogs love (me the trainer) occasionally more than the dogs own owners, when I am the one that is giving them structure. The dogs DNA Doesn’t lie. They need and appreciate the balance that I bring into their lives. YOUR DOG WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT! Note: I just want to clarify that THE HeinZ Method is about letting your dog have fun while they’re in training while at the same time getting REAL WORLD results without being abusive Or trying to dominate them into submission. 5. Will training change my dog’s happy personality? This is another question that most people ask. Anyone that knows me or that has ever trained with me knows that I want to see a quick and happy performance from their dog. I love nothing more than a dog that is happily trying to please their owner all the time. 6. What is the difference between your method and all the other ones out there? Unfortunately, there are just way too many trainers that use methods that are way too strong, yanking the dogs all over the place using loud harsh tones trying to scare the dog into submission. And then you get the complete positive trainers who wait for them to do the correct thing if ever (ex. Such as Pet Store training) that have very remedial skills and nothing really gets accomplished by the end of the coarse. The HeinZ Method really is the perfect balance that gives everyone happy dogs that listen in the real world. 7. Where is the training done? All the training is done in your home where the dog lives. 8. Do you have a facility? We are in the process of finding one and hope to have it up and running by the beginning of 2008. 9. Do you take dogs in for training? At this moment we really don’t , but this is one of the reasons why we are opening a facility, so that we can do all the hard work for you and then you just have to sit back and reap all the benefits of having a super trained dog. HOW GREAT IS THAT? 10. Do you offer group classes? This is the other reason we decided to open a facility is so that we can offer group classes. I really never intended to ever offer group classes , but after so many years of seeing such poor quality group classes everywhere. I felt the need to do this. Our group classes will be the first of its kind to actually give real results that you will never get anywhere else. COMING SOON 2011 11. Which is easier to train large breeds or smaller breeds? Most people buy small breeds because they assume small is easier and nothing could be further from the truth. Larger breeds are usually much easier to train in all areas including housebreaking. 12. What if my dog is beyond training? No dog is ever beyond training. All dogs no matter what their issues are, or personality is like, can be trained with the proper techniques. 13. Have you ever had a dog that you could not train? Never. Some dogs might take more time than others due to the seriousness of the issue, but usually we can have really “bad” things fixed pretty quickly. 14. What’s harder, training the dogs or the owners? By far, training the owners is much harder than training the dogs. Dog psychology is something very foreign to most people and trainers alike, so this takes a little time to soak in and then the timing and coordination of obedience work for some people is not so easy. 15. What do you mean when you say training can save my dogs life? A dog that pulls when on a leash and doesn’t come when called is a disaster waiting to happen just to name a few of the things that can lead to unpleasant outcomes. A dog that constantly bursts or lunges on the leash can lunge a little too far getting hit by a car or they lunge catching you off guard and the leash drops and they start to run getting hit by a car, get into a fight with another dog, or they hurt someone or something else that can get you and the dog in trouble. And since the dog doesn’t come when called you couldn’t stop any of the above. 16. Should I buy a puppy or an adult dog? Most people believe that getting a puppy is better because they will bond more if the puppy grows up with the family. This also is FALSE. You can bond with an adult just as easy. The drawbacks to raising a puppy are that you are going to have to deal with all the things that come with having a puppy and if you don’t get guidance early in the puppy’s life you will end up like thousands of people around the country eventually pulling your hair out and giving the dog away. Adult dogs don’t usually have housebreaking issues, play-biting issues etc. but again without proper structure and guidance an adult dog can start having their own behavior issues. Training with the HeinZ Method for an adult or puppy is the key to a long and happy life together. 17.What Is your most popular training program? Our most popular programs are the (puppy 101) And our GOLD PACKAGE-(off-leash program). 18. If there is a leash law then why would I spend the money and time on this program? Even though there is a leash law what would happen if you dropped the leash or the dog got loose outside somehow? Normally, we all know that without off-leash training your dog is not going to listen to you. When Your dog goes through our OFF-LEASH program they will come back to you every time right away. And who doesn’t want to be able to take their dog to a park or field and be able to play with them without worrying that the do is going to take off. 19. We have had our dog trained many times over, but still no results, can you offer us hope? We hear this all week long from owners when we go and do initial evaluations. When we start talking about their dog and going over solutions, they have never heard anything like what we are telling them. People are always amazed at the immediate changes that they’ve never come close to seeing. 20. Are you available to answer questions in between our training Sessions? Absolutely. I receive calls from clients everyday who have questions about the training itself or hypothetical what to do if……. Questions. We are always there to help you in any way we can. 21. Are you available once the training sessions are over to help me if problems should arise? I have people who call me years later to ask me questions on all different types of dog issues. I am always eager to help in any way I can. REMEMBER: With the HeinZ Method programs you receive lifetime guarantees and support. |
